The Fairy Godmother is Daily Magic's AI Humanity Wellness Companion. She is an AI, not a person. She is not a therapist, a doctor or a crisis service. Caring for someone includes making sure a real person can reach them when it matters, so this page explains exactly what happens when words suggest someone may be in crisis.

The Fairy Godmother lives in the Daily Magic app and website. She can also be reached by direct message on Discord. Where the two differ, this page says so.

1. We check your words first

Every message you send the Fairy Godmother in the Daily Magic app or website is checked for signs of suicide, self-harm or crisis before any AI model sees it. The check runs on Daily Magic's own servers and does not depend on any AI company. The same check also runs in your browser, so help can appear even if our servers can't be reached.

Journal and Memory Well entries are checked the same way when you save them. Crisis help is shown even when the Fairy Godmother is switched off for you, for example before a parent has turned her on for a young child.

Messages you send the Fairy Godmother by Discord direct message go through the same check before she replies.

As a second safety net in the app, if our content-moderation service flags self-harm that our own check missed, the crisis help is shown anyway.

2. If your words suggest suicide or self-harm, help comes first

In the app and on the website, a card appears straight away, before any reply from the Fairy Godmother. It offers 911 if you are in danger now, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call, text or chat; veterans can call 988 and press 1), the Crisis Text Line (text HOME to 741741), the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline if a child is being hurt, 211 for local services, and findahelpline.com and the help lines for where you are if you are outside the U.S. If your words suggest distress rather than crisis, a gentler card offers the same people to talk to.

Tapping a number opens your phone's call or message app. No call is placed and nothing is sent until you press call or send.

Talking about suicide or self-harm never gets your message refused. The Fairy Godmother can still answer you, and her answers in the app pass the check in step 4.

On Discord, the referral is sent as a message before any reply: the 988 Lifeline (call, text or chat), the Crisis Text Line, 911 and findahelpline.com.

3. If your words suggest someone may be hurting you

You are shown 911 first, then the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline (text GO to 1-800-422-4453, or call it), then the 988 Lifeline. Outside the U.S., the card points to the help lines for where you are instead. On Discord the message lists the same lines in the same order.

In the app and on the website, Daily Magic's safety team is also alerted, with a note that contains none of your words, and you may be offered a private check-in so we can know you are safe.

If you might be in danger, or someone may be hurting you:

When your words suggest you might hurt yourself, or that someone may be hurting you, we show you people you can call or text for help right away. If you're in danger now, you can call 911 (or your local emergency number). That choice is always yours. A person at Daily Magic is also alerted, and will read what is needed to help keep you safe. If your words say a parent or guardian may be the one hurting you, we do not tell your parent or guardian. Otherwise, we may let your parent or guardian know, gently, that you may need support. We never share your words with them. If your words show that a child is being sexually abused or exploited, we report it to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, which works with police to protect children. If your words say someone at home is doing it, a person at Daily Magic is alerted and can report it to the child protection hotline for your state instead.

4. Her replies are checked before you see them

Every reply the Fairy Godmother writes in chat in the Daily Magic app or website is checked before you see it. Her kind words stay as she wrote them, even when they talk about hard things. If a reply mentions suicide or self-harm and does not already give a crisis line, one short Daily Magic note is shown beside it (on Discord, as its own message right after hers): "If you're in crisis, you can call or text 988 (U.S.), or call 911 (or your local emergency number) in an emergency. Not in the U.S.? findahelpline.com lists lines near you." It is never mixed into her words or saved with them. If a reply could push someone toward harm (for example, telling someone to hurt themselves, describing a way to do it, or agreeing that someone is worthless), it is held, and a short Daily Magic notice with 988, the Crisis Text Line, 911 and findahelpline.com is shown instead. If a reply goes into specifics that belong with a licensed professional (for example a medicine or dose, a diet or exercise plan, first-aid steps, a therapy technique, or legal or financial advice), it is held too, and a short Daily Magic notice points to the right licensed person, with 911 and 988 for emergencies.

This check cannot be switched off. No setting turns it off: not yours, not a parent's and not ours.

On Discord, every reply she writes, in direct messages, in channels and to the /compass command, is checked before it is sent. Public channels use the same check: kind words such as "don't give up" are left as she wrote them, and only a reply that could push someone toward harm is held.

On Discord, messages in public channels are checked too. The Fairy Godmother's own messages are not. A hard day on its own does not bring an automatic crisis message: she talks gently first. If a message shows someone may be in danger, or hard feelings keep coming, a short reply in the channel, which names no one, gives the 988 Lifeline, findahelpline.com and 911, with buttons to see the full list privately or to talk in a private message.

5. Extra care for young people

In the app and on the website, if we know you are under 18, a reminder every hour (it waits up to 15 minutes for a calm moment) tells you that you are chatting with an AI, not a real person, and that it is a good time for a break.

For children under 13, the Fairy Godmother stays off until a parent or guardian turns her on. Crisis help is still shown while she is off.

Anyone under 18, or whose age we don't know, can chat with her for up to one hour at a time and up to two hours a day, with a 30-minute break after each hour. A parent or guardian can make these limits shorter, never longer. Crisis help is never limited, and a limit never cuts off a conversation in the middle of a hard moment.

6. Reminders that she is an AI

In the app and on the website, the first chat of each day opens with a Daily Magic notice that the Fairy Godmother is an AI, not a human, and the chat always shows a small "AI companion · not a person" label. After three hours of continuous chatting, you are reminded again and invited to rest. A reminder waits for a calm moment, but never longer than three hours.

On Discord, a Daily Magic notice at the start of each conversation says the Fairy Godmother is an AI, not a human. A gap of more than 30 minutes starts a new conversation. Discord doesn't tell us anyone's age, so everyone there, adults and our own team included, has the same time limits as young people above. The one exception is Daily Magic's founder, who gets a reminder to rest every hour instead.

Companion chatbots may not be suitable for some minors.

7. What we count and report

California asks companion chatbot operators to report to its Office of Suicide Prevention each year, starting July 1, 2027, how many times they referred people to crisis services. The report may not contain anyone's personal information.

We keep that count. Each time crisis help is shown, in the app, on the website or on Discord, we record only the minute it happened, where it was shown, how serious the signal was, and whether the person is known to be under 18. Never your words, your name or your account.

8. How the check decides

The check looks for words and phrases that signal suicidal thoughts, plans to die, self-harm, or someone being hurt. It allows for common misspellings and for the way phones type apostrophes. It also knows everyday phrases such as "I'm killing it at work", so they don't set it off.

We test it against a written set of example sentences. None of them are real people's words.

It is built to lean toward showing help: a card someone didn't need is far better than missing someone who did.

9. What the Fairy Godmother is not

The Fairy Godmother does not diagnose, treat or give therapy. She is not a replacement for a real person, and she is not a crisis service. Daily Magic does not sell what you tell her.

10. Questions
